A small
town raises big money in virtual auction to ease famine
The fundraising for the southern Africa famine appeal which was held in St Paul's Park has raised a total of $15,800!
The four churches of Kyneton worked together and organised the
auction, silent auction, raffle, jam selling and barbecue function in St Paul’s
Park in Piper Street this Sunday to raise funds for the people affected by the
drought and famine in southern Africa.
Spokesperson Ruth Murphy said that she ‘was completely overwhelmed and
delighted with the result. I had hoped
that $10,000 might be too big a target, but this result is so wonderful – you can
live your whole life in a town and think that you know it really well and then
it still surprises you. This money will
go directly to those in need through the Anglicord Foundation working with the
Lutheran group who are on the ground, already working in the Horn of Africa famine
area.’
The day was off to a great start with the opening bid of $85 for a
steak and then everything from a peanut butter sandwich to a falafel was
knocked down for amounts usually well in excess of $100. On top of that there was the sausage sizzle
which proved its worth when one customer bought a sanger and paid $1,000 for
it! Not to be outdone by the adults the
kids showed themselves keen bidders with some carefully thought out bids
trumping mum and dad with their pocket money.
When the challenge is there we proved that the united strength of the Uniting, Baptist, Catholic and Anglican churches are a fairly formidable force.

Kyneton's Handful of Dust project |
|
The continuing drought in south east Africa and the ensuing hardship
and famine that is now affecting millions of men, women and children has melded
Kyneton’s mainstream churches into action in an effort to raise money to offset
the effects of the drought which is searing through the area.
Ruth Murphy together with Phil Lyle, Barry Caldwell, Tony White and
Ryan Smith (ministers of the Uniting, Roman Catholic, Anglican & Baptist churches of Kyneton) are behind the concept of a virtual reality food auction which is
appropriate for such a cause. The idea
is to serve a series of truly delicious meals that have been devised by
Kyneton’s children – these then become the virtual meals that will be auctioned
by local auctioneer Kieran McGrath with 100% of the money raised going entirely
to the SE Africa fund.
How do we get 100% profit?
Well, the highest bidder for the meal gets to pay for the meal but in
return will receive a handful of dust – the profits all go to SE Africa drought
relief fund.
And for those who are feeling a little hungry after all this will have
a full blown sausage sizzle to choose from – so no one goes hungry. The full menu is on offer in St Paul’s Park
on Sunday August 28 commencing at midday.
